If I would buy me a 1/35 scale Schwimmwagen, which would the better kit? Tamiya or AFV Club?

Tamiya would be easier and cheaper, but personally I would do AFV.

Note, they are two different vehicles. The Tamiya is a 166 while the AFV Club is a 128.

In that case go for the Tamiya; the 128 was a prototype that did not go to production.

Awhile ago I built a Hero Schwimmwagen Type 166 I got via Ebay. Never heard of Hero before, but it was a nice kit with no fit issues I can recall and the detailing was very good.

Might be better off with the Tamiya; the reviews of the Hero Kubelwagen thought it was a good first effort, but didn't quite meet Tamiya's sharpness of detail and there were some fit and knock-out pin mark issues that hurt it. Can't find any reviews of the Schwimmwagen.

And as a VW owner and collector of VW-related memorabilia, I really wanted the Hero kits to be the new champion and replace those 20-year-old Tamiyas.

Keep in mind that Tamiya had 2 boxings of the 1/35 Schwimmwagen… Avoid the earlier boxing, its a terribly rough and inaccurate kit... The newer boxing is a gem and you won't be disappointed...

I agree with Roland. While going thru my stash today, I found the newer boxing, kit #35224. It has some fine details and with some add-ons like stowage/weapons, it could build up very nicely.

This Chinese review of Hero Schwimm might be of great help to you.

And, just in case, a brief look at their Kubelwagen.

I personally would choose Tamiya Kits for both vehicles. They are sharply moulded, have good fit and tonnes of AM sets for any budget.

Another vote for the Tamiya kit, and agree with the warning regarding their first release way back in the 70's, avoid at all costs.

THIS IS THE CRAPPY ONE

THIS IS THE ONE TO BUY
