Tamiyas XF-86 Flat Clear is not flat enough. Tamiya makes X-21 flat base that can be added to paints to make them duller.
If I added X-21 flat base to XF-86 flat clear, would it make XF-86 flatter?
Thanks Jim

I am not sure if that will resolve the issue. I had the same issue, so I have switched to Model Master Clear Flat, and it works great.

if the experiment XF-86 + X-21 does not work and you want the flattest varnish of all the flat go with AK-183 Ultra Matte Varnish, it's Dead Matt, for me it's the best I've tried

Are you using a paint brush or air brush?

Not acrylic, but old stand by Dullcoat is very flat.

You can make any Tamiya color dead flat by using alcohol as your thinner. Something about the formulation of Tamiya paints alcohol has that effect on them.

I've been wanting to try the AK ultra matt. SprueBrothers is out of stock right now. I'm hoping to find some at my club's contest next weekend.

What I use is:
Task a couple tablespoons worth of Modelmaster Acryl Flat Clear and mix with a couple drops of Tamiya Flat Base. Then I thin with 91% Rubbing Alcohol.
Flattest I've ever seen. Be careful though. Too much flat base and the result will be as if you sprayed wet talcum powder on your model.

Same here. All my "not matt enough" problems have disappeared with AK-183 Ultra Matte Varnish.

The AK UltraMatte is easy to use and indeed dead flat - at first .
Every thing I have used it on has turned slightly glossy after a year or so - this is after using it over Vallejo model air colors . Anyone else experience this ?
