Aloha everyone!!!

I was curious if anyone knew if the up armored variant, the "D" variant, was still in use by Russia or any other user of the BMP-2. If not is there a reason why

Thank you in advance

Hi Kurt;

The BMP-2 was built in large number's and has many users in many varient's ! Even tho the BMP-3 was suppose to replace it in Russian service. There are quite A few other country's who offer up-grades from different engines to different weapons, and the most popular being the many OHWS version's !! The current trend being to up-grade the Armor protection from Slat armor to ERA etc; !!

Thanks Mike!!!

Yeah I get that there's a bunch of upgrades on the "market" worldwide but I guess (and what I should've said) I'm specifically asking about Russia. While they still use a huge amount of BMP-2's in their current active service I've yet to see photos of them with upgraded armor protection like that seen in Afghanistan with the BMP-2D variant.

I haven't seen any pics of the D variant in action after Afghanistan. Do you already have the kit and are you looking for possibilities?

Have you thought about finishing the kit without D parts?
You would get a BMP-2 without Kovriki or sideskirts.

That gives you options for Syria or the Russian-Georgian war

Hi;

The other area or Conflict that you mite have luck is either early Syria or the Ukraine !! Now if you are stuck on the "D" Configuration then you will have to search for A Post Afghanistan "D" !

Hi,

As I know, some small number of BMP-2Ds were left at Afganistan in local troops use. Some of them had been used by russian 201st Motor Rifle Division in Tadzhikistan at least till mid 2000s.

Here is 2004 photo

But for the major part of BMP-2Ds additional armour (because of additional weight and losing of swiming ability) was removed and they were used as ordinary BMP-2. Some number of ex-D were used by Ukranian troops and Donbass Rebels in Donbass conflict. Here is link in Russian.

Dmitry,

The Russian article mentions extra armor under the driver's seat and underside. Were these fitted on the outside? Do you know of any pics?

Thanks in advance.

Dmitry,

Thanks very much. Very interesting and something to add to the Trumpeter kit.
On the lower right front view in the first link, there's also something fitted in front of the first right hand road wheel. Any idea what it is, and if it's part of the D upgrade?

Ed. I think it's a mirror image of the other plates.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you so much Dmitry. For me not just knowing who does or does not use certain vehicle's but more so having the knowledge of why a certain version isn't in use anymore is more important.

Dmitry,

Thanks again, Ive been looking for a bottom view of the D variant without succes.

The right side just shows a hole. Do you think one of the anti mine plates was fitted there as well?

Marc

I think, yes. This hole is for engine access and it looks like anti mine plates had been removed to get to the engine's bottom.
