Gents: I have a question regarding the tan colored tactical marking used on hand-painted green M1A2 in Europe. Are these painted? I read somewhere on the web that they are created with tan colored tape strips. Thanks for looking.
Here is an example of the markings:

Is this a training photo as there seems to be no CIP? Interesting to know where this was taken?

Some of the tanks on rotation to Germany for Operation Atlantic Resolve have been repainted in overall green using a water-based German paint. The markings were made by taping them off and then painting the area green. Remove the tape and you have sand markings.
More info on the paint can be found here.

Yes, it is a training photo taking during the Atlantic Resolve exercise in Romania in 2017. Take a look here, very interesting reading and some nice photos:

Do a Google with the following keywords: M1A2 Romania and you will get some really great photos of Abrams with the overall green schemes and those weird identification markings on the turret and skirt.

The markings are not painted on. The tank is already overall sand (CARC Tan). Tape is applied over the sand in the pattern of the markings. The tank is then hand-painted (rolled) green with a temporary, water-based green paint. The tape is removed and the sand-colored markings are revealed.
