Can anyone explain the difference to me between the AAVP7 without a return roller and old style tracks and the version WITH the return roller(s ?) and new style tracks.
I was told that nowadays (recent war in Iraq) the AAVP's are equiped with the return rollers and the new style tracks but according to the pictures I have and the documentary on Discovery channel none of the AAVP's I have seen have the above mentioned update.
Can anyone help me with this dillema ? #:-)
Thanks

Hi
First here's a link that explains the main differences between both versions :
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/land/docs/990717-aav7.htm
I have gathered quite a lot of OIF AAV7 pics (found on the Web) and I also have the 2 issues of Concord's Special Ops series about OIF (#26 and 27) and the special OIF issue of the french magazine Raid, which have many useful "in action" pics of amtracs and I can tell you that both versions have been used in OIF, with or without camo, with or without EAAK armor.....
Blast Models has released a resin conversion set for the upgraded AAV7 (with Bradley running gear and tracks) but you will have to scratchbuild the new exhaust muffler for this version.

There also appear to be two different types of exhaust systems on top of the hull, both of which show up on AAV's during OIF. The older system is included with the Tamiya kit.

I believe new exhaust system is installed at the same time when new suspension is attached to the vehicle, as parts of RAMS/RS upgrade. So vehicles with old suspension will always have older exhausts.

Hi Frenchy,
Thanks for the reply. Last weekend I bought special ops #27 but I couldn't find the new version. I will take a look again tonight. Other pictures do show the new tracks.
Does anyone have a picture with the new type of exhaust because I can't quite figure out what it looks like.
Thanks,
Marc

I don't know. I think it is currently available only in Taiwan - it is really new thing, so it may take some time before it appears anywhere else.

Pavel,
Are you interested in doing something as indepth on the AAV7 as you did on your M2A2? That would be great, as the AAV is the vehicle that I rode around in during my service with the Marines. That level of attention would be great!

MMB:
Check the Special Ops 27, look for a big round muffler right behind the troop commander hatch. It has a heat shield over it as well. If you can't find it, drop a line back and I'll see if I have some pics I can post when I get home from work.

One day, maybe... I have three Amtrac models on my box pile (two Tamiya and one Academy). I think they are better starting point to build resonably accurate LVTP7/AAVP7, than M2A2 kit was for accurate Bradley. The biggest problem with those kits is the lack of interior. I wait to see how the announced Propaganda company interior set will look like - it will be expensive, but the only game in town. Although now there is a chance for a similar set from Hobby Fan - I hope their new EAAK set is just a beginning of a series of Amtrac updates. I do not have any reasonable references to try to scratchbuild the interior myself.
Regards,
Pawel

All this talk of the AAV7 this week finally pushed me to start work on mine (in addition to some other OIF-related projects). This is my second attempt, I'll use the AEF EAAK this time around, last time I used the Trumpeter EAAK on the Tamiya kit and it was OK.
But the base kit from Trumpeter is horrible, bad fit and motorized.
In anycase, for MMB here's a photo showing the exhaust system (taken from Frenchy's walk
around site).
P.S. I'm looking for any spare MOLLE packs anyone might have for trade....
