Hi guys

I got a question for an up coming project. How would I go about making a kubelwagen appear as though it has been straffed. I don't want it in flames, but I want some holes and some smoke. There will be a wound German sitting next to the vehicle.

Thanks

Wolfsix;

For the "shot up" effect, after painting, take the tip of an ex-acto knife and gently flick out small pieces of plastic where you want "hits". Then dab the holes with flat aluminum (to see how this might look, check the jeep in my "Ambush" gallery photos under Completed Dioramas). As for smoke, that may be pretty tough. You could try real thin wisps of cotton, but to me that never really looked right. Hang in there, though, I'm sure someone out there has done it successfully. Like to see it when it's done.

You could also make bullet holes by thinning the plastic from the inside and punching through it from the outside with a sharp blade. This way you can make the holes as ragged as you think looks right. As for smoke, I've never seen anything that looks really right. I've seen okay smoke effects, but they almost always have an indescribably not quite right look to them, if you know what I mean.
Hope this helps!

Wolfsix: Regarding smoke, have you seen the article in Digitaldioramas "Defeat at Falais 1944"? The modeler Sam Garcia simulated smoke using cotton balls. You could read the article from there...

Maybe that could help or you could improve on what the guy did...its very ingenious...

Hi all

Thanks guys for all the tips and ideas. The project is still in the research phase, plus I still need to figure some more stuff out. I may pass on the smoke and just darken the rear of the vehicle giving the look of a small fire that has already burnt itself out.
If I can ever pry My ex-wife's hands off my digital camara I'll start posting some pic. The "evil one" {thats what I call her} was suppose to return it after xmas.

Bullet holes........Hmmmmmm.

I normally use a very fine drill and gently make holes along the selected path etc...
then taking a model knife and placing it in the one end turn it 360o a couple of times to countersink it..........then paint..........

Look for the 1/35 tamiya (set # 35220) Kubelwagen Engine Maintenance Set. You get the engine and some handy bits that will add an extra dimension to your knocked out kubel. It also includes a hub that can be placed instead of the whole wheel.
Costs $7.60 with greatmodel webstore. Just a thought!

Like I said the project is still in the research phase. I really hope to be able to post pictures when done.

Thanks again

when you take the picture of the tank, have someone blow cigarette smoke through a pipe, just for the picture, so that it looks like its been a few hours since it was blown up. just try it a couple times and keep the picture with the results that you desire, it wil be nice to have some special effects on a picture.

Hey Dragon

Now thats a cool idea. I never would have thought of that. All I need now is to get my "ex" to give me back my camara.
