Does anyone know when the grenade boxes were phased out of the driver's compartments in the M113 series? My memory fails me as to whether or not the M106A?(A2 I presume) I was on in '87-88 had the grenade boxes or not.

Standard M113A2s and A3s still have the grenade launchers and storage boxes on the front glacis plate. But, I too have not been able to find and M106A2 or M1064A2 (new 120mm Mortar Carriers) with the grenade launchers on them. I think it would be correct to leave them off.

i remember that there were grenade boxes still on the 113a2's when i last drove them back in '99

Ok, redaye. Probably left off new ones or after depot refit. They were good for storing smokes and snacks if you were the driver.

My M106 had a hull date that put it at the same age I was so there's no telling what has changed.

Are you talking about the "hand" grenade boxes or "smoke discharger" Grenade boxes? I still have an M113A2 -10 manual, I will look in there.

The hand grenade boxes on the sponson next to the driver.

Well, I took a look at the TM last night and did not see it described in either the driver station layout or on the standard load plans. I would then tend to think that this was a discontinued item on the A2 series. I couldn't tell from the pics I had in the Verlinden book either.
