I believe that any one who is in the military or has been in the military after WWII should go and see the Arizona Memorial and the museum that is across on the main shore. For those who think why did I join the military, a trip here will remind you why. To see and smell the diesel fuel on the water is very somber.

Is it still closed Robert?

I visited many times as a military dependent growing up within sight of Pearl harbor in the 70s. It is indeed very sobering.

Appaerntly so. From the memorial website:

"Due to a critical structural and safety issue impacting the USS Arizona Memorial dock and loading ramp, the memorial is closed to visitation until March 2019 while repairs are made."

My wife took me for my 50th birthday for my first time. I cannot express the emotions it brought up.

God bless all that have and do protect the United States of America

My hommage to the souls, lost in this sound on December 7th 1941.

My praise to all the women and men, that served and are serving their countries with pride and honour.

No one -and no sacrifice- shall be forgotten!

I have never been there, but I get goose bumps seeing this. One of the men that did substitute teaching in Arizona when I was much younger was assigned to the control tower at Hickam, and was on his way to the tower when the attack started.

His first hand account of the attack as he tried to get to the tower was thrilling, but touched with the sadness of loss.

Pete, yes it's still closed although my contingent had the opportunity to get on board anyway. We chose not to, however.

Mark, I still vividly remember one fine morning seeing dozens of planes flying overhead, bearing the Japanese Red Sun. They were of course on their way to Pearl Harbor, where my stepfather was preparing to set sail. You can imagine the sense of awe a kid would have seeing that.
It's pretty well established I'm getting on in age, but I'm not that old. They had begun filming the attack scenes for Tora Tora Tora, and the planes were AT-6 Texans.

We ended up moving to PCP, less than a mile from the site of the memorial, which of course I visited twice. I wonder if you and I went to the same school when we were younger - Lehua Elementary?

It's a real tragedy that the fate of the Arizona is what it was.

That single ship accounts for bit more than half of the total deaths emanating from the Japanese attack on 12/7/41.
