Interesting!
Yeah, its a bit different, but hopefully it works out!
I've increased the contrast with more filter layers, and some darker filters made with oil paints.
I've also done a little streaking with the oils, but will do more after I've done the chipping.
I used MIG's brown filter on some of the parts that I thought may have been painted separately or that may have come from other tanks, such as the external fuel tanks and tool boxes.
Thanks for looking!

We've traversed from interesting to inspiring. YOur work with filters really inspires emulation.
I hope you don't mind if I try to borrow some of your techniques on my upcoming T-34 Stalingrad build.

Cheers mate! Glad you like the look! Feel free to use it, let me know if theres anything I can clarify - looking forward to seeing your T-34
I've continued refining the filters, and also added some enamel effects. I've used mostly MIG's 'engine grime' effect as it is a dark blueish gray, so looked perfect in the deepest recesses.
I've also done the chipping and some more streaking. I'll add some rust streaks from the chips, and then maybe some graphite powder.
I'm gonna add some fuel stains on the read deck and external tanks and some oil splatter from the exhausts. Once I decide on the ground pallet of the diorama, I'll be adding splatter effects to the lower parts.
From what I understand the third battle of Kharkov was during the winter thaw, so the ground would be fairly wet, but still frozen so not overly muddy with small patches of snow still present - Am I correct in this, or would it be more snowy?
Cheers!

Man, I really like the way your filters come out. What thinning medium are you using?
I've been using a Turpeniod by Artist Spectrum (No. 1) and it seems a little thick to me and catches dust like crazy.

I haven't used Turpeniod, I have only used AK's White Spirit. I'm thinking of trying their odorless turpentine, but I'm not sure if it will have different properties.

Hi all,
I had a little time off work over Christmas, but I'm back to work tomorrow, so I wanted to post an update on how it looks now:
Progress will be slower now, but there isn't heaps left to do on the T-34.
Thanks for looking!

Steve,
It looks pretty impressive, and I'm trying to get some of the same rich looks you get with your filters. Here is my question:
Do you do the filters many times after each layer drying?
I'm actually doing an aircraft now and I'm trying to add shadow with a blue filter, and a bit of wash out on the highest surfaces with white, whilst in between I'm using a brown.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Gaz

What I do is thin down the filter a little, then ill apply it on the lower half of the panel, then work it down towards the bottom where it will build up. Once its dry, ill either apply it again without thinning or ill dampen the brush with thinner and work it down again depending on what it needs.

Not sure how I missed this Steve, but it's turned out looking great. Really appreciate the call out of your painting and weathering.
You've mentioned German figures as well as a tank. My question would be this: just how large is your "planned" diorama?
More than curious how it all turns out!

Cheers Dave, glad you like it!
Well, at this stage its planned to be quite large haha, I've got a glass cabinet for my kits and planned to make it the size of one of the shelves. I haven't measured the exact specifications yet, but it will fit 2 tanks and some infantry without looking too cluttered, or too sparse. I will be doing some sketches soon, but I think I'll have to open a new topic in the Diorama section as it'll be only 50% Russian when completed

Thanks Jeff, looking forward to seeing yours too!
I've been working on the figures recently, and they have been slow going, so haven't been taking pictures. The general colour should be a pale greenish greyish brown? Beige? either way, I've decided to paint each figure's uniform from start to finish in the hopes that they will vary slightly.
They are a little darker than they're supposed to be, but will lighten after I apply some filters to shift they brown to a more pale grey and pale green. This will allow me to give them even more variation between figures.
I'm going to finish the acrylics on all of them before moving to the oils to try to blend the flesh tones, and add the filters. I'll also add some mud and dirt to the boots and other bits and pieces.
I'm thinking of making a new thread in the diorama section, as now its not just Russian armour so may not be suitable for this section.
Thanks for looking!

Alrighty, so I've finished up the figures for now (still got oils to do, and dry pigments) but that will all wait for the base, and tank to be in place.
The first figure is the sergeant, his helmet has a small ricochet dent in it that lines up with his head wound.
The long term plan is the do a large diorama with a knocked out Stug, with an injured crew and some German troops who have been flanked in a failed ambush.
I am also considering just throwing the T-34 on a base with some ruins and the infantry dismounting.
I still have plenty of time to think about it, so we'll see...
Thanks for looking!
