O.K. I'm going to spray Testors dullcote lacquer on my Tamiya model which has been painted with Tamiya acrylic paints. Can I use a lacquer dullcote over acrylic paint? It's hard to find the Testors lacquer thinner, so what else should I use. The Testors dullcote lacquer thinner is hard to find. Should I set these aside and use Testors acrylic thinner and acrylic dullcote instead? They new Tamiya clear flat is not dull enough. It,s getting complicates out there.
Many thanks. Rowdy the cat
You have a couple of misconceptions going here. Firstly, Tamiya paints are not pure Acylics in the literal sense— they are acrylic lacquers, and don’t thin well with water like many Acylic paints do. Secondly, Dullcoat is a lacquer, but it can be used over most acrylics, as well as Tamiya acrylic lacquers and other enamels without any issues when properly applied. Thirdly, Dullcoat is a lacquer so it will not thin well with most acrylic thinners. Dullcoat can be thinned with Testor’s “Red Can” enamel airbrush thinner, which is what I use when airbrushing. When in doubt, it's always better to use the manufacturers recommended thinner. In this case, Testor's enamel Airbrush thinner works very well with Dullcoat. You can also decant Dullcoat from the spray can and use it straight in your airbrush (but I like to thin it with "Red Can" enamel thinner. Hope this helps.
