very interesting especially the link. I do want to model a Higgins landing boat at some point. I remember having the "frogman" version - it was so long ago and I so young - there was a raft and 3 or 4 frogmen with a hoop to scoop them with - and I would like to build it again but with a deck davit and cabin.
Q: could the twin kit referenced be made into a single like the GM link shows? or is there a better kit of a single available? I don't mind buying a kit for the engine since there are so many other useful gubbins.

I guess it would be worth checking the available Valentine or Archer kits to see if they include the 6-71 engine....

The kit would need a whole new bottom end.
Now, the LSSC used a pair of Cobra 427's. Black Ops models offers the Engine bay. I had contacted him about just the engines, and he was more than happy to sell them without the full compartment.

The Meng 8V-92TA-90 Diesel Engine (in resing for the HET kit) is a more modern engine that also has a marine application.

The Detroit Diesel 6V53 (M113A1 engine) is another valid option.
Here's the marine variant :

A pretty basic engine can be found in Tamiya's M113 Acav kit 35135

AFAIK, the engine in Tamiya kit is the original 209 HP gasoline Chrysler Model 75M ...
If you need a 6V53 engine, you'll find one in Academy M113A1 or A2 kits.

You are correct, upon closer inspection the Acav set is a V8.

… now you have a decision to make: Which one do you want me to send you? No point buying a whole kit...
Robert, your generosity has not escaped me! I have a 1/24 model A engine which - although it will make the true Nauti-philes shudder - I intend to cut into a 3 cylinder engine. odd is it may seem, I think this will fall in line with the rest of the ship. it's a "gateway" model, and as such I actually want it to be bringing in details from my other interests. heck, i'm even going to have a bicycle strapped to the lifeboat "just in case".
thank you for the very kind offer.
