Need DUKW help and ideas

I built both of these kits at christmas, thinking I would have it made before Italeri released the package set. But looking at Italeris latest set, they have removed panels for the gun to sit on the cargo floor. I know its not totally wrong to have the 105mm sitting high as there quite a few pics of it like this. But it just doesnt feel right.
I have bought the tamiya 6 x 6 Truck Accessories, to use the ring mount and machine gun.
I would also like to add the canvass cover supports and maybe a bit of canvass rolled up. Any ideas on scale height for these? I have heard some talk about the drainage holes in the sides .. and these represent a vehicle after the war. Is ths right? Should I fill in all these holes along the side? Any other touch ups or ideas would be most welcome. What do I do with the 105mm? Could the DUKW tow this? Any ideas would be appreciated here also!

WW2 DUKW's did not have the drainage slots along the sides. This lead to a serious rust problem which was solved post war by cutting the drainage slots in then.
The Tamiya GMC 6X6 truck has scale hood bows and finished height (to scale) from the cargo hold floor of the DUKW to the top of the bow is 37mm or 3.7cm. These bows were a flat section rather then a round section. Scale width is 1.5mm or 0.15cm.
The DUKW was not designed to tow anything to much and I have never seen it towing a gun before but this does not mean it did not happen. One way to mount the gun as a load in the DUKW would be to partially strip the gun which was often done. Remove the wheels and sit the gun on an angle. I know the Australian Army did this quite often with their 25 lb guns and other equipment including Auster spotter aircraft.

hope this helps

Thanks Cliff. I was hoping you were around tonight!
I just want to add a little to it, rather than fill the cargo bed with oil drums. Probably will add some anyway, but with the machine gun ring, hood bows and some rolled back canvass, it will give it another dimension.
Could the hood bows from the 6x6 truck be used straight from that kit onto the Duck?
Thanks for your help!!

yes that is what I used on my DUKW
these just need a very minor amount of reshaping on the bottom to fit the slots in the DUKW hull.

I think that is well known by now! Thanks Cliff. I appreciate the help. I would like to move on with the duck now again.

Sorry to just jump in, had you considered mounting the gun Directly to the Dukw rather than putting the canvas ribs on? Might not be historical but It would LOOK really cool!
