Hi Everyone,
My first snow diorama... heck, first diorama... And I'm using some hobby snow I recently bought. I pressed some tank tracks in it to make an impression, but they're very hard to see.

I've seen wildlife photos where shadows in animal tracks look like a pale blue. is there a consensus of what works to make detail in snow photographable?

Or is it a question of trying to use shadows and photography to tell the tale?

Thanks for your thoughts!

No clue my friend as I have yet to try a snow scene myself. I like your idea of shading with blues for contrast. This will be a thread I will be following with interest! Best of luck

It will depend a lot on the depth of the snow and wether the vehicle has broken through to the ground underneath or not. If not then the deeper the snow the more blue the shadows as long as the overhead sky is blue. Grey sky = grey shadows.

When I was into model railroading many years ago, we used to make our basic “snow” base out of plaster cast material—hydrocal. Then we’d airbrush it in subtle blue shades (very subtle), and cover it with specialized types of commercial “snow” material to represent either wet or dry snow, old or fresh snow. Check the Walthers catalog for those materials. The subtle shades of blue would show though this material just enough to hint at depth.

Guys,
Thanks for the replies! Pre-shading was the way to go. Hopefully they'll get successively better!
