I bought and just read Osprey's book on Technicals, the improvised gun trucks that have become popular over the past forty years, and one that was depicted was an M35 gun truck like used in Vietnam, except in the Mideast and equipped with a Soviet antiaircraft gun. Anybody know more about them?

Maybe not the ones you're looking for, but here are some M35 gun trucks fitted with ZU-23-2 AA guns from Somalia :

Here's an older, M34-based one in Lebanon :

Another Lebanese gun truck :

But if you're looking for an even more "exotic" M35-based gun truck, here's the Fenix from Venezuela :

For the record, AFV Club was the only one who make a M35 in 35th scale. Although Academy has one in 35th scale its, a re-box of the AFV kit.

I take part of my statement back. I read that Italeri's M47 Patton (if I ever build one) is actually more accurate than the new Takom kit.

I don't think that you're being very fair; IMO, all THREE of those manufacturers should get a second look for many of their kits...

Should always be a kit by kit basis, never a broad gloss. With so many choices for some subjects some companies can be left in the dust. But other subjects and you'll discover a real gem under a label you've dismissed for years.
Like the hard cab Italeri Deuce and a half.
Hard cab CCKW with a rear mounted quad fifty turret were used by National Guard ADA units to the early 1960s for sheer lack of anything else. There's a picture in the 50th Armored Division 1952 yearbook of a few of them on a beach firing over the water.
A veteran told me that Deuce and a halves were the towing vehicle for the quad fifty trailer anyway so might as well just put the whole thing in the back of the truck to start with. No unhitching the trailer and setting it up.
By 1960 there were enough M16A1 halftracks available to retire the trucks.

Agreed. All companies have kits that are dogs and gems. Discounting entire model companies due to a perception that all their products are junk is pretty stupid and limits you quite a bit.

AND there is always the risk or chance of getting a kit from brand A reboxed by brand B

Italeris M923 is, without competition, the best styrene kit of the M923

That's another one on me. But I've still been too unhappy with Trumpeter to go back to them.

Italeris M923 happens to be the one and only game in town ...
There is no competition, nada, zilch ....
The whole statement can also be turned around to say that Italeris kit is the worst M923 out there

With good references and some aftermarket and some work it can be turned into a really nice model

There seems to be some confusion as to what trucks are being discussed. M 34/ 35 Are 2/12 tons while the M 923/ 925 and M54 are 5 ton.

I remember years ago playing the computer game "Ultima 5" where you meet a blacksmith who brags that he is the best blacksmith in town, but is also the only blacksmith in town.

Agreed. Allowing for my really basic skill levels, the Italeri kit can be made to look better than just straight from the box, which is how it’s being assessed and judged here.
Having read Vodniks excellent build review, it’s evident that there’s a lot needed to get it to his standards-and he’s done it!
I’m just happy to bumble along, learning how to use PE , finding the right wheels, (DEF) and paint to use.
If AFV produced an M923/5 I’d buy it like a shot. After all it would be engineered to a high standards and be a rewarding kit to build.
You would, judging by their M35 kit, still be buying Eduards or other PE kit and (maybe replacing the rubber tires), but it would produce a great model.
But they haven’t made it, so we’re stuck with the Italeri kit and the shelter truck and gun truck kits.
If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.

What's wrong with Academy by the way? I was planning on getting their T-34/85. It looks nice.

I thought so, too, but among its other problems, the worst was the fact that both turrets were way too rough in their casting texture. Unless you want to buy an aftermarket turret, avoid.
