i wonder if any of you could tell me how to make fake fire for an aircraft crash scene.

Well, fire is very hard to make look realistic. The best i have seen is made of cotton the type that is in pillows Ive only exsprimented a little with it . But you can pull and stretch to make the cotton thiner and spray it with hairspray so it will hold it shape and than paint yellowish orange and maybe a little red at the bottom and a blackish grey color at the top for the smoke. I think celluclay has been used to make flames there are some pics out there but dont know were they are maybe someone else post that knows were there at anyway this is just my 2 cents worth maybe it will help.

PFC is right on the money, cotton is the way to go.
Ive tried it a few times also, and it can turn out reall realistic if you put your mind to it, give it a bash, im sure it will turn out great! cheers!

Doc Dios has a photo of the cotton fire technique used to it's best form by me. It's the panther that has been knocked out with the crew escaping. The engine is aflame which has the cotton flames emerging from the engine screens. Very nice but still.......fakish. Also, act now....Doc Dios is closing down his site!

it depends what kind of fire you want,
for example, open flames are very difficult to recreate realistically, but
smouldering embers i.e. burnt buildings etc can be recreated by painting the majority of the structure flat black, adding ashes etc around, and using some of the humbrol dayglo orange paint, add small spots at te bottom, in amoungst the burnt beams etc. this can look very realistic.
leds can be used to display fire burning inside something, like an oil drum or a building.
get your leds, and either paint them with the clear colour you want, or put them underneath celophane. as long as the leds cant be seen, the glow created looks great
cheers

Here's a few more ideas,
Get some of those cheap hobby paints from WalMart in fluorescent yellow, red and orange. Play with them to simulate the various colors in a fire.
When I clean out my electric razor, somebody snuck in a bunch of chopped up grey whiskers that make super ashes.

I've seen fake cigaretts, where the glow was maid of red metalfoil with (something to resemble) ash over it. It looked quite realistic, but I don't know if it does work in smaller scale.
