Hey guys. So my son decided to wanted to jump off into building his first kit. He did all the work and I gave him tips and pointers. We rattle canned the base coat. Then it came time to do the camo. I asked him if he wanted to just use a brush (because he has never used an airbrush) and he said he wanted to try the airbrush. I was a bit shocked he chose this but what the hell, we gave it a shot. I was so pleased with how quickly he picked it up. We still have some detail painting and weathering to go. There is a local show coming up that he is really excited about to display his first work, so that's our goal here.

The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree. Great first effort. Really like the cammo. Looking forward to seeing more.

Dustin,
Wonderful!
That is really his first model? My first model (or hundredth) never looked as good as this one, even with my dad's help.
Keep going!

Thank you guys for the kind comments. He is happy he hear them!
Henpainted up some of the tools today. I was surprised how well he did with a brush. I made him go over some areas where he needed to "clean up" the paint with a little base color.
Looks like tomorrow I'll have him do a filter.

Cheers

He appreciates the kind words guys, thanks.
He got some more work done in the last few days. Wheels and tracks painted (tracks not installed yet), clear coat on and decals on. He is waiting for them to dry and I'll have him spray her coat of clear. Then after that dries I'll teach him the fun of weathering

which is what he is looking forward too. Can't say that I blame him. He did really good on the decals with the instruction I gave him. Sadly these decals are very old and slimy. I hope it turns out ok after the multiple coats of softer and then some more clear.
Anyhow, we are nearing the end. I hope he wants to build more after this one.

Cheers

Will it be finished in time for SoonerCon? Hope so. Very nicely done and the decals look great.

Today he is getting his weathering on. This is definitely the fun part for him. I'll post more shots of the weathered Vehicle once he is done.

Well, I am reminded of what my kits looked like at that age, a brush and a couple of bottles of Testors paint. Yours looks far better than mine did.

Hi, Dustin!
We haven't conversed in quite a while!
You have a budding "Star" in the making; encourage him without pushing. Answer all of his questions to the best of your abilities and don't hesitate if he wants to explore other "niches" in modeling. If he wants to build a plane, let him "fly"; a car, let him "drive". Though I don't build as much as I used to, mainly because of my health, the modeling hobby has been with me for 61 years, now. It kept me out of trouble by occupying my time when I could easily have been getting involved in all kinds of shenanigans...
Tell your son that an old "curmudgeon" of a very experienced modeler gives him accolades and praise for his fine work on this, his very first model. His model is something that he can be PROUD OF, as we here at ARMORAMA are PROUD OF HIM!
How old is he, and what's his name? All of us here, I'm sure, would love to see more of his work!!!
Thew BEST of LUCK in that Hobby Show!!!

Excellent. Really like the one rusted plate. The detail painting, tools, etc. are very well done. He looks very happy with himself and he should be. Built my first kit when I was his age. Wasn't even painted and I had know idea what an airbrush was. He's leagues ahead of where many of us older modelers started. Good thing he hasn't discovered girls and cars yet. Gives him plenty of time to hone his skills before those distractions come along.

Alright fellas, here are the results!
He won Gold Medal AMPS Junior. He is so so proud and so am I.
We had a great time and can't wait to attend our next show.
John, it was great to meet you. Thanks for the warm welcome.
Cory, (I think, sorry I'm terrible with names), thank you for teaching me how to judge. It definitely opened my eyes to my own mistakes.
Here are a couple pics.

Thanks for all the support!
Cheers
