The new forum is link in "most" areas of the sites navigation now. The only specific area that leads to the old forum are the links on the home pages for the Latest Posts page. This is still going to the old version. The new version is not fully synched up with the new forum yet although it works for the most part.
Please leave any comments or suggestions about the new forum here. Bugs also.
Thanks,
Jim

Yahooo! Lets start riding that new wave! This will certainly bring out any of those hidden bugs.
Good show Jim.
PS: Does SquawkBox seem faster or is it just me?

Yeah its faster
I dont know if the old ones were based on MySQL but MySQL is THE best database.
A suggestion -
the "Reply" buttons are at the top of the thread.
I follow the thread from the top to bottom reading my way through it
I want to throw in my proverbial two cents
I gotta scroll back to the top to hit the "Reply" button
Can they be added near the last post so theyre easy to access after reading through a post???
Thanks
Looks great

Never Mind -
I see now that each post has a "Reply" & "reply w/ quote" button
so I use the last post to launch mine by selecting one of those two options
Apologies & Congrats on the Rollout

when I open the forums page it is not showing me the ticks to show that there is unseen posts in that particular forum. When I open my normal look at forums the pink color of new posts is there but no tick on the out side to show they were there.
only just got used to the old forums and you guys just have to confuse this poor old Ozzie by changing things around. #:-) Never mind won't be posting much for a while now anyway.

Mr Roo -
Youre posts are long admired

Alright - heres a weird one -
I didnt mean to use so many of thise little emoticons on the reply to Mr. Roo
I'd hit one, and it wouldnt show up
(the character based placeholder you get until the post goes "live" and renders as the icons we know and love)
I wouldnt see the little ASCII symbols that represent where my selected icon would go
SO
I whacked it again
then
I cheated
I hand keyed the beer mug one
Its just Bars and Parenthesis
and I made a mess
If its a me thing, apologies
If it later seems like a sensation you experience while doing something else,
maybe its a "find it and tell the developers" thing
I love to see us running atop open source software solutions -
Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP
abbreviatted LAMP in the IT community

The thing I don't like about the way is that you have to check every single forum to see if there is any new postings since the last views. There is no way to see if there are any new postings. I hate to say it but it could become as bad as the FSM forums. I might be jumping the gun and the little indicators will appear after Jim is all done with the transformation (I hope).

I have to agree with Animal, I really miss the flags telling me where there are new posts. Hopefully this will eventually show up.

MySQL on Red Hat powered by Xeon. Impressive! Apache server? Like the new look. Easier to navigate. I'm a "Latest Posts" guy though so I'll wait 'til that part syncs Thanks Jim!

John,
Lol...thanks. I am afraid everyone needs to join the latest posts bandwagon as I just explained to Halfyank in another post. If everyone is a bit patient I think you will realize that the LP page is a much quicker and economical way of keeping up to speed on the forum. For instance....does everyone know you can sort the LP page by forums?
Cheers,
Jim

In due time, everyone will get used to the new forums. It's tough to teach old dogs new tricks - as they say.
I for one have always used the LP link, and find it the absolute best way to see "what's new"
One thing I would like to mention as others have, is the "Reply" buttons. Kinda wish they were at the bottom of the posts. Any chance they could be moved?

To illustrate what I mean, look at this image. This is what I get after not being on the site since last night. Is this There are 6 (eng) forums that don't have new posts.
HOWEVER.... I may be able to come up with a simpler version of this page that shows you all forums that have new posts since your last visit. I am just not sure why this would be better than simply using the latest posts page. Zach made the comment that it looks like a family album...well it is in a way. The main page of the forum is where new and intermittent users go to find out what kind of discussions the site has. If you are a regular user would you need to read a description of the forum?
Thanks,
Jim

Simple to add it back. Since it's on every post (next to reply w/ quotes) I kinda figured it wasn't needed again at the very bottom. But I think I may be wrong on that one.

We can do that??!!! #:-) Reinforcing my "Latest Posts" habit eh?
By the way, I got a parse error when I click on "Latest Posts" from the home page. Something like you're missing an apostrophe or a double quote. Good luck on the code changes Jim! Will be watching out for bugs
Posted: Wednesday, March 31, 2004 - 05:13 PM UTC
That error is fixed. Although I also fixed the multi-lang feature on the SquawkBox LP page, so I will likely be changing that link over tonight. I will leave the old forum up for a while (or at least until I figure out the correct mod_rewrite rule to redirect all old links to the new forum). Any suggestions on that from our programming members?
Thanks,
Jim

OK boss that is the page that I like. Simple for me to see what forums have new posts and just go to those which I am interested in.
I have just had a look at the latest posts page and it is the first time I have. I noted it was difficult for me to read and the better one is by far the one you have illustrated with the ticks.
PLEASE bring this page back!

I'm a 'latest posts' fan, one click and I can see all the new posts. But then I'm into more than one subject. The facility to sort the forums works well if I'm just chasing a thread ! No changes needed as far as I'm concerned.
