Hi. I'm sorry if this is an obvious question, but did the Allies ever whitewash their helmets in winter time? Ardennes, Eastern Front etc? It's well documented that the Germans practised this, but I'm almost certain I've never seen a photo or model of an Allied soldier with a whitewashed helmet. Was there a reason for this? Thanks. I've seen some photos from the Battle of the Bulge with American GI's wearing white cloth helmet covers; one is of a mortar crew during the battle and the photo is actually in color; however have had trouble locating it on the Web.

Some of them, apparently, just picked whatever was available in white...

Thanks for your replies. It seems the Allies didn't paint their helmets in whitewash, more white cloth material if at all. Maybe a direct order forbidding the use of valuable white paint. Thanks for the great photo, I've never seen that one before. Much appreciated. Neil
