Hello everyone I am modelling a Stug III from Sturmgeschütz brigade 280 during the battle of Arnhem.

I have read that the unit had the spare road wheels mounted on the rear fender as opposed to the usual mounting on the engine deck.

Does anyone know where the jack block, and fire extinguisher were moved to as these were usually mounted on the fender where the spare wheels would now be?

St Br 280 also mounted a lage stowage box across the rear deck. My guess is that they would have been stowed in there.

Could be...but I know if my Stug was on fire I would want the fire extinguisher more accessible than having to jump up on the back deck and open a box (maybe even locked) to put out the fire.

Hello...I am working on the same kit as you have....I have the wheels mounted on the back fenders....will be working on the interior tomorrow. Where did you mount your fire extinguisher and jack block? I mounted them on the front fenders as I could not find any pictures where they were stowed.

I wish I had seen your pictures before I attempted to mount the tow cables...what a royal pain in the ass....trying to get them to loop on the fenders...I ended up running the cables to where they would make the loop on the fenders and gluing them without making the loop...will put some storage there so they are covered up.

I planned on the MG 42 also on top as the remote machine gun was not installed.

I see you are using an AA gun....I will be using a captured Britsh Airborne jeep and a couple Para prisoners and German guards as you see in the famous pictures with the Stugs in them.

I see you are in Holland...would you know what color the bricks in the street were at the time of the battle?

I am reading Robert Kershaw's A Street in Arhnem..a fantastic account of the battle along the Utechtseweg from the British, GERMAN And Dutch civilian accounts before, during and after the battle.

In the book he mentions the streets in Oosterbeek being covered with branches and leaves from the trees along the street being cut by all the fighting....would you happen to know what type of trees they were?

my apologies for the delay in answering.

I used the Dragon 6633 StuG III kit for the Arnhem variant.After viewing the photos in both ” Kampfraum Arnheim ” and the Concord book on Arnhem by Marcel Zwarts I had to make the following adjustments:

– Other tracks ( closed horn , zigzag profile)
– Spare wheels on the rear fenders (instead of on the engine deck)
– Big box back with large lid on top
– Towing cables behind already attached to the towing eyes and on the fender lying
– Zimmerit on the fenders
– Cover for the bottom Nahverteidingungswaffe
– Cover for the remote control MG with a number of bolts
– Some spare tracks on the fender

I did not add a fire extinguisher or jack block; I did not see these on any of the images...

As for the trees, along the route you can see oaks, chestnut trees (Aesculus hippocastanum), birches and plane trees (Platanus). There are still original trees along the route, being placed around 1925.

The streets are indeed very common Dutch bricks, I would use a hull red color and add some light variety and also a grey wash.

Thank you for your response, I made all the same modifications to my Stug III, except for the tow cables as I did not know about that change, like I said before, wish I had as that would have made life much more easy.

Thank you for the information on the trees and bricks, my parents are from Holland, and I grew up with the stories that my father remembered (born in 36)..of the vast air armada on that day, and also the Hunger Winter when ever I would not finish my dinner

I have Marcel Zwarts Concord book, in your conversations was anything ever determined about the camo schemes? There is that one famous picture that looks like one of the skirts have the "Ambush" pattern, but not the rest of the visible skirts, any insights to how the rest of the vehicles were painted?

Great job! The figures work extremely well for an Arnhem scene. I look forward to seeing how you tackle the figure painting and which patterns you choose for the smocks.

Looks great but I would do something different with those rifles of the gun crew. They would definitely gravitate down the arms and onto the ground. Slung across the back instead of over the right shoulder?
