H.P., are you there?

I need a photo or two of a Panther spare/replacement engine being transported or shipped. Were they mounted on some wooden support frame or what?

I'm here Bill, but I ain't got much to offer (not to say nothing...) I vaguely remember a period picture showing a Panther on a railcar with a spare engine beside it. The engine block was secured on wooden blocks IIRC...But as Conway Twitty used to say, maybe it's only make believe..

Haha, Frenchy, you're funny, Mate. Let me know if you find anything. I have tried Googling it but it's hopeless as I get everything BUT what I'm looking for.

On Wikipedia under german armored vehicle production in WW2 there is an image of a tank assembly plant. They are not Panthers, but the picture shows a large number of engines in some sort of shipping frame. Might at least give you an idea what it would look like. Hope it helps. Wayne

I've used Wayne's advice as a starting point for a new search and came across this picture :

Full size

Look like the block is tied to the wooden frame using the block lifting eyes (the red arrows are not mine ) :

Thanks, guys, that looks like the ticket. I can scratch that frame and put it on the back of an Sd.Kfz.9.

Hi Bill. Take a look at this:

Found it via Missing-Lynx last Friday.
If you look very close, you'll a lot of engines.

Kind regards,

Did they really transport these delicate engines "naked", without a box? Seems kinda risky outside the controlled confines of a workshop...

You can always use the crates from the TAMIYA engine maintenance crew set.

I'm afraid the "box" included in Tamiya's set is in fact a "low budget engine bay" to be used if you want to add the engine to the Panther (or Tiger) kit (just check out the instructions )

Probably not. They likely were shipped in crates. That just makes sense. But without some photo evidence, we're groping in the dark here. H.P. and Robert Jan at least are putting me on the right trail.

Here's another view of the assembly line (with some empty wooden stands...) :
