EPP III Generator Set for Patriot Missile Battery mounted on HEMTT:

Just offering this thread and the info it contains as an F.Y.I. to anyone who might want to build ALL the vehicles that comprise a Patriot Missile Battery or would like to consider a somewhat unusual load for their favorite HEMTT model. . . . Enjoy!

If the US Army would just switch to the HEMTT A3 hybrid electrical concept vehicle offered by Oshkosh they wouldn't need all these aux. generators! The transport tractors themselves could provide all the electrical power the missile battery might require.

(But I digress.)

Found a reference that says the generator for the Patriot Missile Battery is the Cummins Power Generation VT28-G but my internet access to those spec pages seems to be blocked. (I have encountered this security block before when doing research on the Oshkosh HEMTT.) I will continue looking for the dimension specs.

Not sure if the above spec refers to these auxillary truck mounted generators or to the smaller one mounted on the missile trailer itself. There seems to be different gensets being used in these various photos of the aux. generators.

Sorry - not the greatest pics but all I could find.

(Quote From Wikipedia)
The EPP-III Electric Power Plant
The EPP-III Diesel-Electric Power Plant (EPP) is the power source for the ECS and Radar. The EPP consists of two 150 kilowatt diesel engines with 400 hertz, 3-phase generators that are interconnected through the power distribution unit. The generators are mounted on a modified M977 HEMTT. Each EPP has two 100-gallon fuel tanks and a fuel distribution assembly with grounding equipment. Each diesel engine can operate for more than eight hours with a full fuel tank. The EPP delivers its power to the Radar and ECS through cables stored in reels alongside the generators. Additionally, it powers the AMG via a cable routed through the ECS.

There appears to be a subframe that secures the two gensets, fuel tanks and electrical cable reels. This subframe attaches to a special loadbox on the standard HEMTT. This non-standard loadbox has special fold down sides that form catwalks to allow for service access to the generators.

Shown here is generator mounted on Patriot Launcher trailer - this is a different spec from auxiliary truck mounted gensets or single axle trailer mounted generators.

You might try this website for additional EPP III information:

http://generators.tpub.com/TM-9-6115-669-13P/

(Still have not found dimensional data on individual generators. Perhaps I can find it somewhere in the civilian sector covering the same genset in commercial service.)

1. Cummins 150kW Generator Set x2
2. Control Enclosure
3-4. Ground Cables 2x
5. Ground Bar (threaded)
6. Lifting Sling
7. Generator Support Pallet
8. Cable Reel (Low Voltage Control Cables)
9. Cable Reels (High Voltage Power Cables) x4
(Cable reels rotate 90 degrees when deployed)

10. Pallet Shock Absorber/Tie Down x4
11-12. Fire Extingushers
13. Exhaust Hoses x4

Hi Michael,

maybe this is what you are looking for:

I found this in the “Technical Manual Electrical Power Plant III”, page 40.

https://www.liberatedmanuals.com/TM-9-6115-669-13-and-P.pdf

Btw how did you manage to get pictures out of a TM into your posts?

‘Hope I could help.

Wow Peter EXACTLY what I was looking for !*!*!*!*!*!*!

Thank You

Diameter of Power Cable Reels appear to be just a shade under 36 inches or 91.4 centimeters.

Peter, as to lifting photos out of documents; both Mac and PC Computers have the built in capability to capture photos at screen resolution off their monitors.

With the Mac it is "Command, Shift, 3" to do a screen capture. You will have to look elsewhere for the PC command set. I used to know it but have forgotten.

Position the desired photo or drawing as large as possible on the screen and hit the capture routine. I then use either Photoshop or Gimp to straighten and/or clean up any needed items in the image. Other photo manipulation programs may work as well. Often all that is required is to convert the .png files to .jpeg and you are ready to go!

Thanks again for the link to the TM.

Windows users have the dedicated "Snipping tool" (even Vista included it ) :

Hi Michael,

‘glad I could help. I’m really looking forward to your EPP build.

I had similar ideas: Got an Italeri M1120 HEMTT for birthday, thought about adding a “Forward Repair System”, would need a grove crane for it, considered about buying an Italeri M977 HEMTT and use its crane as a base for the required crane……!
But what to do with the than crane-deprived HEMTT?! ……. Research ……… aah, maybe a M977 HEMTT EPP……….
In the end I decided to build a “Hippo”. ‘Got some drawings and the TM……. have to make some more drawings and order some necessary items ………..

Thanks’ a lot for the detailed explanation of how to get pictures into the posts.

Happy Independence Day!

Salut Henri-Pierre,

Thank you for your help. Yet, I am the one who still uses Windows XP.

Hi Michael,

interesting links and great work!!

I like this photo!
The four folded flatracks really look cool. In this context, it would be great if you could share your experiences regarding the MKK rack, you mentioned.
So maybe I don’t have to buy a complete M1120 to just get an additional flatrack.
It is the first picture of the top of an A4 cabin, which I saw.

Hi guys,

Some years ago i made myself an M-977 HEMTT EPP with some help from these drawings shown here.
If you want to see the pictures, follow the link below:
