My first tank for years, the Italeri Sherman M4A1 with Tamiya turret. I've given the kit a coat of olive drab and airbrushed areas of it with a lighter shade to age the look of it. Any advice on the next stages would certainly be gratefully received. My thinking is to give parts of it a coat of Future before apply the decals and then do a wash followed by dry brushing?

Looking good mate, i like the shading you have acomplished.
I would give the whole thing a light coat of future and add the decals, then the fun begins.
Let us know how you get on :-) :-)

That would be my next step. I'm just starting to play with Micro Sol and Set. You may consider using something like that on the decals.
Looks good so far.

Looks very nice so far! Yep, just go ahead with your wash, and drybrushing, hell, then you can break out he black and white chalk pastels, even add in some brown for the lower part, sweatydogz is right...that's when the fun begins!

Brandydog,
Looking good !
Should either coat your whole model w/future or some sort of flat coat sealer. You won't have any issues w/a wash or drybrushing reacting w/your paint job or anything that follows.
Good luck

Looks good. Gloss coat, decals, flatcoat and then weathering to finsh I would say. Pastels or just good old fashioned drybrushing, earthtones on the lower parts; dust, rust & scuffed bare metal on the upper areas.
I get jealous when I see the finish that you, Merlin etc get on aircraft, now I'm going to have to look at the way I finsh tanks as well. Must think again about an airbrush I guess.

i have always wanted to build one of those one's with the rounded edges.... you say italeri makes it...might look it up and see what i can get.
Bare in mind that this model is a combination of two kits. The straight Italeri M4A1 kit is a 76mm armed version, with a diferent style turret. In fact, the type show here (late style hull, 75mm turret) did exist but is a very rare version. Most seem to have been used as a basis for the American DD's.

Thanks for the replies guys. My one worry is that I may go overboard on the weathering, I have some Mig weathering powder for the lower hull and undercariage. For the wash I thought I'd mix black and brown for a grimy colour.

The difference in the two bodies of shermans is that one is cast (the rounded one) and one is welded (the one with edges), correct?

At a high-level, yes. M4A1's in cast hulls, M4's (including the A2, A3, A4) in welded hulls.
And then the "composites" - cast fronts with welded main hulls.
Then there are the other issues that set Shermaholics a quivering; angles of glacis plates, wet vs. dry stowage, engine deck configs, hi and low bustle turrets.
It's enough to make you just want to model modern armor.

Now is the IPU on the turret or hanging off the back of the hull? And what the heck arre the shutters for???? (I'm kidding, of course.) And what about tracks -- I have the ESCI kits, the Tamiya kits, the DML kits and the Italeri kits, but I want to build an M1IP from Korea in 1989 .... got ya "quivering" yet???

Does the Tamiya turret swap perfectly with the Italeri hull and vice versa? Do the rings and tabs fit right of did you have to do a bunch of cutting?

The Tamiya turret just sits on the hull of the Italeri kit, the ring must be larger on the hull as there is a bit of play. The tabs don't have any contact with the hull ring at all. I don't have the Tamiya hull so I don't know how the Italeri turret would fit.

The Italeri turret is larger than any of the other sherman kits that I've found. When I used the 76mm turret on an Academy HVSS cast hull there was nearly 1/4" to take out of the turret ring to enable the turret to drop in!
