Hi guys,

I'm planning to build the M51 Super Sherman, but I'm not sure on which colour to use as a base coat fot paint-chipping; is it a dark gray shade, or is it plain olive drab?

Hope you can help me out on this one, John

Depending on how much weathering you plan to do John, the difference between dark grey to represent metal, and Olive green basecoat probably won't be that noticable. I'd go with the dark grey, using art masking fluid and industrial scotchbrite for the scratching

There is also the salt technique.......base coat, sprinkle water, sprinkle salt, let dry, apply top coat, rub off the salt, touch up. I l;iked the effect it had on my 222. Just my 2 cents.

Should one use dark grey paint, or a metallic color, such as MM metalizer steel?

Doug,
I'd go with the gray paint and if you want to show the area as metal use a soft lead pencil. Rub a little in the area, then use an older paint brush to rub it in a little further. Looks very realistic. HTH "Q"
