How good/bad is this kit??

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1746985482

Also, which kits are the M48A2 and which are something else. There is also this one:

I am trying to fill out my Patton collection and need a good M48A2, or at least the best that is out there.

It's a decent enough kit for one produced in the 1966. I've got the one in the white box that I got off of eBay for about $10 this year. They pop up often in at least 3 different boxings, the original "long box" with a drawing of the tank, the white square box and the blue square box. Price will vary based on box condition.

I have my old built up one that I did my first painted camouflage pattern. This was also the first tank my dad built for me (long since gone). The one from eBay is my 3rd one I've owned, but only the second one on hand.

As far as the kit goes, it does have a correct back deck for the A2, the tracks are the biggest problem and need to be replaced. They have the end connectors at the end of each track block and they don't connect one block to another. This is really no problem since M48/60 chevron tracks are a dime a dozen.

As far as detailing, remember, this was produced in 1966 so it is rather simplified. Slightly better than a Renwal/re-issue Revell M41/42. My recommendation is to get a Tamiya M48A3 and rob most of the parts. Keep the Monogram back deck and commander's cupola, it is the correct early style. Use the Tamiya suspension, turret fittings, tracks, gun, lights, etc. You will notice the grunt rails are molded on to the turret sides.

The decals will need to be replaced too. They are the thick Monogram glossy ones. They give you the options of C-12 3/4 Cav with all sorts of hippie slogans or Israeli markings.

Mine comes with the two page Shep Paine diorama tip sheet. I can scan and send you the file. I recommend the kit for someone who really wants an M48A2 or is a nostalgia buff. I reiterate that if you want to make a truly decent M48A2, it will also cost you a Tamiya M48A3.

Then of course, you will want another to make a West German M48A2GA2 and then an Israeli M48A2C, both equipped with a 105mm. You will need the Lo Models conversion set for the GA2. It never really ends does it?

FYI, there is also some debate as to whether or not this kit is in 1/32 or 1/35 scale. Even my Monogram Models history book lists the kit in 1/35 issued in 1966 and then 1/32 in 1983. I can dig out my Tamiya Patton and compare if you need me to.

Sabot,

Glad you mentioned conversion to M48A2GA2. I have two of the Monogram M48A2, three Tamiya M48A3 and the Lo conversion kit. Now I can make the German version with the 105mm. The 543rd Panzer Battalion (Territorial) was our partnership unit when I was in teh 2-68th Armor and they had the M48A2GA2 (105mm).
