My understanding is that Panzer Kompanie Hummel joined Pz.Abt 506 prior to the Ardennes offensive as its 4th company with some Tiger Is which were a variety of different models.

I also believe that their number system was a 3 digit system with a 4(for 4th coy) and then 01, 02, 03, etc for the tank number...instead of the 1 or 2 digit system used by the rest of the 506 companies....plz correct me if I am wrong about this.

My question is...what colour were the turret numbers for the Tiger Is serving in the 4th (Hummel) company?

Also, did the 4th company have the battalion insignia (the big W) on the rear of the turret like the rest of the companies and if so what colour would it have been?

Thanks for any info.

I guess it's time to add another title to your reference library. All of your questions can be answered in this book, "Tigers in Combat Volume II"

Just to confuse matters further, Dennis Olivers Tankcraft book states that when it left 506 in Feb 45, the markings reverted to the normal system of numbering the tanks beginning with a 1 followed by a number. There seems to be some debate as to whether these were Red following normal practice or Green.
