If it's their acrylic (round jars), you won't have issues (assuming you aren't using any super powerful thinners). If it's their enamel line (square jars), you could theoretically run into issues.

I use oils over Tamiya all the time. Their "square jars" are primarily the "panel line washes", and yes, I suppose these might be a bit of a problem depending on the thinner you use. I use Turpenoid Light, and either Windsor & Newton or Mona Lisa oils. The Turpenoid light dries quickly and flat. If you are really concerned, you can give the model a base coat of Testor's Dullcoat over the Tamiya paints, but it's not really necessary (at least with Turpenoid light).

I love Tamiya as a base coat. No need for primer! However, if you are going to mask with tape, I always suggest a light sanding with fine paper for better grip. Nothing worse than lifting the tape and paint and primer lifting from the model.

Howdy Y'all
I've used oil washes plenty of times on Tamiya paint. Never a problems, but remember:
"When in doubt, test it out."
Sorry for the bad rhyme.
Good luck and I hope you share your progress with us.
Take care,
Don "Lakota"

Russ I think you are confused. Yes the panel line washes are in a square bottles, but Tamiya also has an Enamel paint line that comes in square bottles similar to Testors. I believe that is what Jon was referring to.

You’re probably right! Confusion is becoming my natural state since entering old age! But as the Tamiya enamels are difficult to obtain when compared to their more common Acrylic lacquers, I made the assumption he was speaking about the enamel panel line washes. But you know what the word “assume” is! Where are you getting your Tamiya enamels from? — I haven’t been able to find them in the US yet.

Ha ha. No worries Russ. I still consider your input very valuable. When I see your responses, I always think you are one of those guys that want and have to help others. A great quality to have at any age.
p.s. Tamiya enamels. I ordered some on ebay last year, and came from Japan

I noticed now that you talk about Figures, in this case given that usually with the oils technique you use almost any thinner I go directly on whatever base, also on the enamel, without any problem, if the base is dry you have to use lots of thinner like a overall wash to damage the base, I have also made pin washes directly enamel on enamel without any problem, but a test is always good because Thinner vary from brand to brand and from country to country, I use hardware store thinners from Diggers or AK/Ammo washes on Humbrol Enamel dry for at least 48-72h and i never have problem...but i also never do overall washes and i am very gentle with the brush

You will probably never find them...no longer available to
the USA & CANADA.
Your only recourse buy from the Asian market via Ebay.

Cheers,
yep--that's what I thought too. I always wanted to try them, but haven't been able to find them here in the US. It has something to do with Postal regulations and air shipment, in that you cant ship certain paints through the mail here in the US. It's funny, just today, my wife received two bottles of lacquer nail polish through the USPS, and I mentioned that to her. a couple of months back, I received six bottles of Mr.Color Lacquers through the USPS. When I asked my mail carrier about it, he said it depends on how it's received at the PO. He did some research and found out the Mr. Color was originally shipped United Parcel Service (UPS) air, and was labeled for continued delivery to the local PO for actual road delivery. I wonder now that Amazon has it's own fleet f aircraft if we'll see items like paint delivered more often by the local PO.

Its always my intention (among many others here on Kitmaker) to try and help where I can, and "pay it forward" for all the help I've received over the years. I'm fortunate enough to belong to a group of modelers here in the Northwest who make it a habit of helping others whenever and wherever we can.
