Hello fellow scale modellers,

I'm not sure in what sequence I need to apply camouflage colors/paints. Do I need to put the dark colors on first or first the light colors?

Thank you in advance,

Lada_Niva

Primer first then the lightest color second, then the darker colors last. Applying light over dark gives a different hue to the light color.

It depends on whether you're masking or free-handing. If you're free-handing (with airbrush) paint like the real one - with Dunkelgelb first (if a panzer). But if you're masking, it's usually easier to spray the camo colors first, and mask each one, then finish with base color overall.
Of course, everyone has their preferred method!

Thank you for your reply.
I'm not really knowing what masking is or how to do it. I'm still not very proffesional on this topic. I have much to learn. And masking would be one of them. Maybe you can tell me something more about it? Till now, I'm probably free-handing the spraying with my airbrush. Don't really know yet how to upload foto's and use them. But that would be a interesting thing to checkout later.
Thank you for your reply,

Hi, and welcome!

You can check a couple of forum topics on putting photos in your post here https://archive.kitmaker.net/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewforum&forum_id=24&page=1

And masking is a technique where you mask a certain area that's already been painted in colour A. Here you don't want to have Colour B on. Then you paint the area that's not masked, using Colour B. After the paint is dry you remove the mask and you have a pattern consisting of two different colours with a nice clear edge. That's why you use masking : for the clear edge, that's being called a 'hard' edge. When you don't use masking you get a soft edge (when you use an airbrush).

Masking is mostly applied when working with an airbrush (although it is possible while handpaintin, it's more difiicult though).

And it's mostly done for camouflage, but also for a lot of other stuff (e.g. markings,...).

Ask Google about: airbrush masking techniques
There are videos and text + images.
Go for the easier techniques first.
One big difference between airbrush and hair-brush is that the mask needs to be really tight againts the surface when using a hair-brush to avoid paint getting in under the masking tape.
With an airbrush the mask does not even need to touch the surface.
Practice on something unimportant first!
