Hi
Seems Tamiya have a new set of German WW2 infantry figures coming out which like other recent sets uses laser scanning to generate them before the mould making process.
Seen in post on Missing Lynx from Tamiya Show at the weekend

Look really good.

One of them is pre-pointing with his binoculars ready to stare into the middle distance.

Funny thing is some of the same posts show up in both threads.
But this thread predates the other official announcement one by several hours.

Yes it would appear my post prompted someone responsible for news items to get the details of these out, although to be frank the photos in my link show clearer images.

This is a pretty nice set. From their poses & facial expressions, I can envision this dio scene; the guy with the binoculars seems to be a bit confused, while the other four have an unspoken, but collective look that says, "What,, you got us lost again?!?!?"

Good question as the box top and sample figures show early war uniforms.
The grey trousers and dark green collars were early war. Mid war should be field grey trousers and collars from the M40 uniform.
Really in 1/35 scale only a matter of painting.

Facts to consider: Jackboots worn - but these were in use right up until capitulation. Absence of gas cape pouches - more likely 1941. The painted examples have Feldgrau jackets, but gray pants - pre- and (very) early-war, but if you paint the pant same color as jackets they could represent any other stage of WWll.

Without looking at my references I think early war had shaped/scalloped flaps to the jacket pockets but later on they were straight cut. Not sure though, as I said I'd need to check my references.
If it is the case then the box art is wrong, with shaped flaps but from the pictures of the actual figures, and its difficult to tell from the images, they look straight cut to my eyes.
Whatever they are putting aside the title on the box they are very good, so much so I've a set on order from my local model. shop.

Looking at the box art, I'd say they would be right for Barbarossa '41 and the advance on Stalingrad'42. The green faced tunic collar was not seen on new uniforms from 1940, although it can be seen in pictures after this date. Trousers were issued in field grey from around 1940 but I suppose the stone grey version would maybe, still be worn after this date. The straight cut pocket flaps seem to appear on the M43 issue tunic. They are a very nice set of figures, I look forward to getting a couple of them. Tamiya figures have certainly come on recently. This set even surpasses some Dragon offerings.

There's no doubting these are nice. However, whether laser scanned or hand sculpted, it makes no difference - the limiting factor is still injection molding. Undercuts like collars, hems. pocket flaps, are near impossible as the finished piece still needs to be able to be released from the mold. I say near impossible because Master Box has many figures with separate torsos, making hem undercuts possible. I know of at least one of their figures with a separate collar as well. These are features I'd like to see Tamiya do more of. Of course with resin fiigures it's a non-issue.
