I think you might want to talk to Generalfailure as those look like The tanks that go in the back of M35s or M900 series trucks. Generalfailure is scratch building (ibelieve) a 1/16 scale M35 variant.

Matt,

Thanks for that Pic !!!

Those look indeed like the fuel cells I'm scratchbuilding for my M35.

For more info (all I ever got on this subject), you can check the thread onFuel Cells and recently I added a model progress update. Check out the pictures in the Photo Gallery too (Modern US Armor - Trucks)

Those are fuel tanks use to carry fuel in a 5-ton truck. I had a support platoon, as a Cav Squadron S-4, with nine 5-ton trucks, each carrying two of these pods and a pump pallet, plus towing a 1-1/2 ton trailer with a third pod. I believe though that the capacity was only 500 gals. They banned carrying the pods in trailers because they were unstable going cross-country. However, it you can find a model of a 1-1/2 ton trailer it would be neat with the pod mounted because we put dualies on the trailers to give them aqwider track and to improve stability.

The surplus store selling them says they're 600 gal. I don't know for sure.

Matt,

They could be 600 gallons, been a long time.

General Failure.

A M35 2-1/2 cannot carry two of the fuel pods, it takes a 5-ton. 1000 gallons (1200 if pods are 600 gallons) of fuel and pods weigh over 8000/9600 U.S. pounds (4-5 tons in a 2-1/2 ton truck) One pod with pump unit will max out the cross-country capability of the M35. I have seen duece-and-a-halves with a single pod and pump unit. Hope I didn't screw the pooch for you.

Matt,
I was sure I had pics of an M35 with 2 pods.
I checked, and you're right. I have only 5 ton trucks with 2 pods. My mistake is based on pics that show an M35 transporting a load (3 or 4) of the fuel pumps that come with the pods.
So you think a truck with ONE fuel pod and a pump system would be technically correct ?
Then where do I place the pod ? Towards the truck cabin, against the pump of somewhere half-way ?
One pod woud interest me. I could throw in a load of jerrycans. Would that be correct ?

Can't be 600 gal pods. The length is too short. I remember them as 300 gal pods. Then again I was amazed that a 1 quart bottle of Peach Oscar fit into a 1 qt canteen cup. After 3-4 botttles, the whole world could amaze anyone.

600 gal would be the size of a tanker truck (M-49C tanker), fuel or water. Like the type on a 21/2t chassis.

Where's a POL guy when you need one?!?!

Just to muddy the waters. #:-)

I seem to recall that the M49 was 900 gallons, plus add the pump and gages etc, to give you the length you see. I have seen the single pods mounted toward front of 2-1/2 ton bed and then pump towards tailgate so crew can get to controls. Use lumber (4"x4" and 2"x4") for blocking and bracing to keep outfit from sliding around in bed.

based on a rough size of 4.5 ft x 4.5 ft x 6 ft (121.5 cuft) they are 756 gallon.
but based on the shape it would be 600 gallon

They are @ http://www.colemans.com/ go inside and do a search fo 600 gallon.

If you don't believe it.

OK,

Had to research some just to know for sure. I know I suffer from the CRS syndrome and to make it worse I remember enough bits and pieces to be dangerous!

The fuel pods are 600 gal. The M-49 2 1/2t fuel trucks were 1200 gal, the M-50 water tankers were 1000 gal and the HEMTT tanker is a whopping 2500 gal.

Took a little quartermaster searching and a call to the local Guard Cav unit.

And having lost the original question of this thread, sorry Matt.

The pods are still in use today. I would guess they entered service in the 60’s, as that style was used in Viet Nam. The military uses them worldwide. Like posted earlier, they were mounted in truck beds or trailers.

Don’t know if there is a way to cross reference LIN numbers into NSN or name and model numbers. The LIN for a TPU is V12141 (2 600 gal pods and pump), 600 gal fuel pod V12141 too, 5t truck for the TPU X40794 and the 1 1/2t trailer for the fuel pod is W95811. If I remember right a LIN (line item number) just gives you authorization the have that item.

See the forest for the trees? Hell, I can’t even see the trees. Sorry for the run around Matt.
