Just as there turned out to be a book series by Shelby Stanton on US soldier uniforms which is more comprehensive than the Osprey books, I wondered if there were some equivalent comprehensive books on British uniforms that are better than Osprey's? Because as some people on this site mentioned, the Stanton books did cover everything inclusing all types of uniform items.

Hi Tom, not strictly uniforms, but The Canadian Soldier from DDay to VE day by Histoire and collections is a great book. There are sister albums for the British and another for US forces. Great books for around $40. The Canadian and British volumes contain common items in each except for the insignia. Hope this helps, best regards.........Dale

The WWII Tommy in NW Europe in Colour Photos by Martin Bradley and Richard Ingram is a good reference. If you have that and the two volume Histoire and Collections series on the British Soldier at D-Day that pretty much covers it. H&C does an additional volume on British and Commonwealth airborne forces and one on the allies in addition to the one on Canadian Forces already mentioned. More specialised and detailed is the three volume series by David Gordon on Uniforms, weapons and Equipment

To be honest,I would like to find a rock solid ref book just covering shoulder patches for the myriad Commonwealth Bns serving in Europe in WWII. Talk about a minefield of research ! May be easy for folks in the UK but not over here !

Jerry,

Try "Formation badges of WW2 - Britain, Commonwealth and Empire by Howard Cole, from 1973.

Mainly in black and white but with colour descriptions; I've just checked on Amazon (albeit UK) and it seems to be fairly widely available.

The book by Brayley and Ingram is more detailed on uniform variety, and depicts reenactment in original uniforms. The Histoire & Collections book (part 1) is less detailed on various uniforms, but has period pics and extensive coverage of webbing, field kit, rank insignia, unit insignia and forage cap colors as used by different units.

'Glad to be of help; it is a bit long in the tooth now (1973) but as a basis there's probably not that much out there to match it. It includes a couple of very useful appendices covering Arm of Service stripes and a descriptive list of animals, plants etc to enable you to cross reference as necessary. For instance, if say you glimpsed on some film footage a Kangaroo, then the book will point you to 6th Australian Division, and so on and so forth.

If you couple it with whatever ORBAT you need you should be able to identify just about anything that you wish.

Hi Jerry, I recommend the Histoirs book on Canadian badges and equipment, D Day to VE day, the Canadian soldier. It also has charts and markings for the Canadian order of battle. If you are looking for info on specific Canadian insignia, I can help. I have all of the Canadian cap badges, shoulder titles, and the formation badges from 1,2,3 Infantry divisions, 4,5 armoured and 1,and second independent armoured brigades. I also have all the corps badges including 1 Canadian Parachute Regt.,and FSSF. If you need any pics of Canadian cap or shoulder titles, just let me know Jerry and I will gladly get them for you. The above book has all the formation badges for vehicles and has all the RCA badges and info. The info on equipment is basicly identical to the British counterparts as we used the same equipment. By the way Jerry, how is your book project coming along? I will be waiting to buy one for sure. Best regards..........Dale

Hi Jerry, sorry to hear that the book is no longer in the works. A Putot project sounds very exciting, any time you need my help, feel free to ask. I have a large collection of Canadian memorabilia and also a lot of WW2 German items. I would be thrilled to offer any help you might need on a project. Merry Xmas to you and yours Jerry, and I look forward to seeing what comes from the Rutman bench in 2020.
