I've seen decals for camouflage uniforms, but I should think there are enough kilted figure kits for there to be a market for tartan decals. I found nothing so far.

after perfecting my camouflage paint (https://armorama.kitmaker.net/forums/282617&page=1#2375999), tartan is next on my list. i'll be doing both acrylic & oil versions.

Kilts are full of pleats, creases, and folds - especially at the back. It would be a major PITA to get decals to conform to all these complex curves.

Which would be the case for camouflage uniforms too. Wonder how anybody is able to do that?

I've read of lots of complaints and frustration trying to get them to conform, even with lots of Micro Sol, etc.

If you can do camouflage uniforms you can do tartan.

Tartan can actually be seen as easier because it's a simple grid rather than a wild but very specifically patterned swirl of color.

For example, government sett (Black Watch) is:

1. Paint background dark blue
2. Paint dark green grid over that. The size of the grid has changed over time. 18th century was smaller.
3. Paint a medium green square where the grid lines cross.
4. Outline it all in black. In smaller scales this isn't visible so can be left out.

Other highlander regiment tartans are variations of Government Sett. One adds a red stripe (the grenadiers of the Black Watch had a red stripe too), another yellow outlines rather than black.

Then there's Royal Stuart which changes the colors. Most of the tiny stripes can often be left out because you can't really see them at any distance. You can only see the basic grid so you only have to hint at all the color as opposed to the basic pattern.

I've done it three times so far and have a diorama of a highlander square at Waterloo that will require 20+ sets of kilt and trews.

Trews are actually harder to paint because you have to wrap the pattern around the pants leg as opposed to the flat surface of a kilt.

That looks like Stuart Tartan. Do they have Black Watch?
