I remember reading that all sorts of extra items such as water tanks and stowage boxes were welded to the BTR-70's used in Afghanistan, but so far I've found no illustrations.

Google "btr 70 afghanistan" and check out the photos. Doubt there are diagrams. This stuff was not regulation, it done in the field by the crews. One that looks common was a spare tire/rim on the turret top.

I did and found precious little in examples. Maybe I was wrong?

I tried using google translate to translate 'btr 70 afghanistan' to Cyrillic (БТР 70 Афганистан ) and then searching, then selected images. Searching with -1/35 and -zvezda takes out most of the model returns as well. I'm sure some of those sites have lots more images.

I have the ancient Concord book downstairs in the stash, let me dig it out and see what's in there. I seem to remember there being some with a large marmite shaped water tank, some with wheel/tyres on the turret roof and lots with open engine hatches.
Drop me a pm tomorrow night if I forget to get back here.

There were two model water containers. A large one and a smaller cylindrical one.
SP designs makes the large one:

Some BTR-70's had extra armor on the hull, and/ or a 30 mm Plamya grenade launcher on the turret.
SP designs makes the add on armor as well.
You can buy SP design products directly via Facebook, or through SAAM models.

Thanks. eBay had the water tank, so I'll stick with that.
