Actually the series starts with the M46, which by the way is powered by the same engine block (Continental 12-cylinder, 1790 ci., the earliest gasoline-burning version). It runs, M46, M47, M48, M48A1, M48A2, subtype M48A2C, M48A3, (M48A4 was used for Israeli versions of the M48 in official US Army documents), M48A5, M60, M60A1, M60A2, M60A3. There are several subtypes within teh M60A1/A3 family, although those are minor. The M26 Pershing was similiar to the M46, however it used the Ford V-8 tank engine and is not considered part of the Patton family.
