The book U.S. Army Vehicle Markings 1944 by Jean Bouchery and Philippe Charbonnier has s section on Unit Serial Numbers. There were more than 8000 numbers allocated. Unit Serial Numbers were assigned to every formation that landed in France D Day to D+90 They consisted of a 5 digit number and 3 colored bars.

They were to ensure proper loading on the transports to France and placed on all vehicles, artillery, trailers, and baggage.
