In my experience, they don't always fit. I'm not sure about the Panther kit specifically, but I do know that they didn't fit properly on the KT kits. If you're determined to try to use them anyway, you might have to slightly trim or adjust the PE, which isn't very difficult.

Surely if he is a "buddy" then he could let you have them, eyeball them against the model to see if they fit before you remove them from the surround and if they don't send them back.
Not sure if these are spare from the Dragon kit or a set he brought seperate as you don't really say. They shouldn't be too expensive either way.
If he doesn't want to let you try them and if they don't fit return them then he isn't much of a "buddy" in my opinion, but your criteria may differ.
