Please could someone advise me on the colour of a Maybach engine.
I am doing a Trumpeter 1/16 Jagdtiger and at the moment I am doing the engine.
I am using Tamiya paints and In the instructions it’s saying that the bulk of the engine is XF65 Field grey which is the colour of the German uniforms as I understand it. Anyway to me it looks more like a dark grey green and it doesn’t look right to me.
I also looked at the Tamiya XF63 German grey and to me that looks a little bit to dark to me.
What would everyone’s thoughts be on this and if not Tamiya paints then what paints would they use.
I would be very grateful for any help.
Best Regards to all.

Well the engine in question is the Maybach HL230:

If you google him you will also find a page "Fahrzeuge-der-Wehrmacht" that has more pictures. Maybe those help

I have always found print references calling for Maybach HL230P30 blocks were black. However, if you Google Images "HL230P30" you will find original engine blocks in black, dark grey, and field grey.

Thanks Joe.
I would like to recommend 2 books that I have just received today and although it’s about the Panther tank and they basically use the same engine.
Nevertheless for anyone doing a panther build the books would be an invaluable source of reference.
The books are called The Research Squad Panther project volume 1 drivetrain and hull and Volume 2 Engine and Turret.
They are by The Wheatcroft Collection.
The photos are second to none.
I would highly recommend them.
Best Regards to all.
