Hi Folks,
I'm wanting to build a current US Army ambulance to honor my son who is serving in an Alabama Army National Guard Medical Company. They are currently activated as part of the COVID-19 response. He said the ambulances they are using are M1197 FLAs (Field Litter Ambulance). I am having no luck finding any references to M1197s on the internet. Does anyone have any info on this vehicle? My son said it was based on an HMMWV. Are there any models out there of an M1197 or can I convert an M997 to create an M1197?
Any and all assistance is gratefully appreciated.

Are you sure it's a M1197 ? When I search "Field Litter Ambulance" on Youtube, I get a short National Guard video showing....A M997

It sounds like they could be using the new MRAP Ambulance. It is based on the MaxxPro MRAP.

That's not likely if, as his son said, it is indeed HMMWV based.

FLA has the designation M997 A3. It`s a completely new super-structure build on M1152 UAH chassis. Could be easily done by using Academy M1151 and build the superstructure from sheet.

Whoops, missed the parts where he said it was definitely on a HMMWV.
The M977A3 does not have a new super structure though. It is the same rear box that is on the previous versions of M977s. It is just the most current version built on a heavy (M1100) chassis. You could build it using the Academy M1151 chassis/body and the Academy M977 ambulance box. They should fit together perfectly.

I didn't mean they are recycling old shelters, but the shelter design has not changed. It is the same design that has been used on all M997s.

By the way John, my son is in the Texas Army National Guard and is too deployed in support of the epidemic. They keep extending his orders. So far he has been gone almost two months. Then they got to go through their own quarantine when mission is done and before they are released off of orders and come home.

Thanks everyone for your responses. My son is supposed to send some pix this week. I asked him if it was a 997 and he said it was an 1197. Since he drives one I couldn't argue with him. Thanks for the model recommendations too. I'll start searching for kits.
Thanks to everyone who has served or are serving now. Pete, that goes for your son too. My son's unit was state activated the first week in April and then went federal activation the last week in April. Don't know when they'll be released to come home.

When You open driver's door there should be a placard with HMMVWV version. Could You please ask Your son to make this placard's photo? There is an example of such placard at the last two photos from 1st page of this walkaronud:

The shelters have changed some. Larger door leading to the cab; LED lighting, environmental controls in the shelter instead of the cab are some changes I'm aware of. Don't know if these would be visible from outside the vehicle.

John, check out the angles of the shelter. M997 is having a radius, M997A3 is almost sharp. That what makes it difficult to use the Academy shelter OOTB.
