I like to add the amount that it takes to give me the amount of sag I want. I don't bother to count them.

I was instructed this when building my IDF M109 Rochev:
Proper tension has the track just off the 3rd road wheel (should be able to put your finger between the road wheel and the track).

Close enough. When I chiefed an A5 it was 1/4 inch off of the third road wheel, after driving it back and forth. Barely discernible in 1/35. If I had taken a better photo you'd see it;s about right.
