I'm wanting to finish a diorama of a Katyusha truck being re armed . Does anyone know if the rockets were shipped in crates , boxes or tubes ? So far the only pictures I've found showing loose rockets are of the crew mounting them to the rails , or standing on the ground holding them . Any of you know of any pictures showing open "boxes" of rockets ?

What a remarkably difficult thing to find! At 1:46 in this video is a brief view of the M-13 packing crate, not much to work with however.

I even put it through Google translate and searched in Russian, no luck!

Hello, Jim

The rockets were transported in crates.

I could not find any available pictures of the real thing, but you can see the drawings here

Hope it helps

That's great , thanks guys . I think I can probably make something work using some of Mini Arts ammo box sets , I know I've got a couple of each of them around here some where .Thanks again

Modern or WWII? Edit: My bad, I rarely read the forum sub-headings. But anyway, here you go-

These are 107's:
Two to a box. Buried and allowed to ferment.

Perhaps a better view if you enlarge it:

Perhaps a bit of clarification of this "nickname" is in order here. The term Katyusha has been loosely applied to at least 8 different types of rockets and countless types of vehicle and ground-mounted launchers, spanning years from 1939 to the present day. Since the OP came under the Discussion Group heading of WWII Soviet Armor, I assumed the topic was concerning the most common M-13 rocket, but it could have been the M-8, M-30 or M-31 rockets as well.

Yeah, I noticed the subheading after my initial post, hence the edit right afterwards. But I figured what the hell, they're still pretty good photos. It doesn't appear as if the boxes have changed much.

Regarding the fins - current rockets don't have them. Spin (and therefore stability) is imparted through the six canted venturies in the rear piece.

The air intake on my first chopper build was made from just such a piece from a rocket that landed outside my hooch. You might be able to see how the venturies are canted, is case anyone wants to model one of these on an improvised launcher. Strangely, to the best of my knowledge no one produces this fairly ubiquitous weapon.

I'm happy to be incorrect. The Trumpeter Type 63 rocket launcher comes with 12 of the 107mm rockets. Enough to arm a small insurgency cell.
