Maybe a stupid question, but wore the FT-17 from Lt. Patton French or US markings?

According to Osprey’s Battle of St. Mihel, they were in US makings, and there are several photos showing FT17s with a heart in a diamond motif on the turret. The French liked to paint their unit markings on the “trail“. However, US and French camouflage was similar, because these tanks came from French stocks.
