We have been frequently asked how we achieved the snow effect on our recent NeOmega Resin 1/35th scale Trans-Antarctic Tractor kit diorama.
The base was 50mm building insulation foam. This is solid, close grained and easily cut. And, crucially, as this was to be a model of the iconic crevasse photo, when fractures, it looks just like ice. The models was placed and the crevasse was drawn to match the real photos. It was then cut with a long blade and parts snapped off until the shape resembled the real thing. Additional blocks were cyano glued back on for the overhangs.
The model's track sponson trenches were cut out, and the model eventually assumed the correct position, slightly leaned over, with the front right sponson almost vertical against the opposite wall of the crevasse, where it was as the snow bridge collapsed beneath it opening up a 100 ft deep chasm!
The snow was then applied using AK Models 'Snow Effects' acrylic paste. This can be thinned with water to make it flow, or left to create snow blocks. Remember, the Antarctic is basically desert conditions, there is no liquid water, so little ice would form unless heated up at least some 140c above the ambient temperatures. This means that the snow would behave like sand. Blown off the vehicle but getting packed into all the cracks.
The model was partially pained with the snow on the track sponsons, then placed. Snow was then 'painted' and sculpted to make it look sunk in. The distinctive Adele penguin tracks were also made! Finally, microballoons were dusted over the tracks and brushed into the cracks as per the real photos.
Thanks!
Gordon

Took a while! They climbed down and chopped onto the sidewalls. Then they installed aluminium ditching ladders. The thing was then carefully driven out forwards, whilst being towed by another one. This happened only 25 miles from the start too! And was repeated on a few other occasions. However, all 3 vehicles survived to the finish!

Thanks Frenchy! It’s refreshing to see a non-military subject depicted in diorama form here from time to time. This has all kinds of diorama potential, not to mention the fact they also used Weasels— it would be interesting to see more photos of the expedition, perhaps with more diorama potential.

Gordon, thanks for that! Lots of interesting ideas there, and the Neomega snow cat diorama is simply outstanding. It took me a few minutes to realize I was looking at a diorama of the original photo, I couldn’t tell the difference!

Pardon my ignorance but who makes this model and in what scale?
It very much looks like something I should have on my shelf!

Michael,
Uhh... NeOmega makes it in 1/35. Take a look at the first page in this posting. That’s a photo of the model in their diorama! not the real thing! There’s some artistry on display there. But I agree— it should be on my shelf too! Great minds think alike???:D
