I hope, anyway, it's Panda Models. Also I managed to get a book on the Soviet Afghanistan War (written in 1986) which has given me details on how the war went on in the early years. I wanted to show how the early soldiers travelled in-or on-the BMD-1 before they realized they weren't in 1968 Czechoslovakia.

I don't put up build pictures, so I'm afraid you will be disappointed.

Buildwise, or in accuracy as well? Those tracks look heart-stopping!

Hi;

You Think the Panda kit is Awful; try building either the Eastern Express, Skiff, or Zvesda BMDs !!!! Of all the Version's that I built the NONA turned out the best.

CHEERS; MIKE.

Hi Tom, I'll be following this build as well. I recently wanted to build the BMD-1, too, and had to decide between Zvezda's and Panda Hobby's kit. In the end I bought Zvezda for the budget price and I can say that it turned out nice, apart from the awful two-part rubber band tracks and the fiddly and rather thin wheel arms. Panda Hobby's kit has lots of PE and the single-link tracks and overall has better details in my opinion, so I think yours will look better in the end.

Let me know how it goes!

Regards, Lukas

My quest isn't simply building a BMD-1. I wanted to show one that is part of the initial invasion of Afghanistan, crewed by Soviet soldiers who are not yet aware that Afghanistan will not turn out to be a pushover conflict like their interventions in Europe.

OK, I confess I put this kit into the Goodwill giveaway. Reason: I saw the tracks. When a kit has such nightmare-to-assemble tracks, it doesn't matter how good the rest of the kit it. I'll have to find something else.

Can't you get some aftermarket ones?

What's the issue? I presume the teeth need to be glued? I went through that with Trumpeter's 2S1 kit and it wasn't as bad as I expected, but the tracks were at least of link and length type, not all individual links.

Having said that, I'll probably use some aftermarket ones on the SA-13 kit, though.

I did buy expensive aftermarket metal tracks for Tamiya's M26 Pershing, but it was worth it because I definitely wanted to build that exact model for a diorama.

I didn't have my heart set on the BMD-1 anyway; I could use Trumpeter's BMP-1 which I heard was good. Also, I couldn't find Spetznatz figures, but plenty of motor rifle troops figures are readily available.

The Zvezda BMD-1 is not bad, I also used the SpaceAce metal tracks on it as I did not like the kits rubber tracks.
