Hi all,

What method(s) do you use to hold a figure whilst you paint it?

And does it differ depending on the material you're painting, i.e. plastic, resing, metal?

Cheers, ,

I drill a hole in the bottom of the foot, and superglue a large bent paperclip. Use a third hand to store the figure between painting.

I use the pin then stick the plastic and light resin figure in cork wine cap. Sometimes I use medicine cap and bottle as I can invert the bottle to protect from dust and anything else.

Hi Ryan,

Hope your builds are progressing, ?

Thanks for sharing your methodology...it seems pinning is the way forward.

I had wondered if there were any commercial holders, but could only find ones that seem to be aimed at the wargaming market where the figures are fixed to bases that the device can clamp.

G, you should know better that to ask that. I will post when I do get time.

I have seen hand held and base similar to this marketed to our scale.

I find the pin and cork good enough for me so I haven’t gotten a tool for that but if I did, I really like the idea of the support bar as my finger want to get in the way.

Hi Ryan,

I look forward to seeing any posts you submit, as for knowing better, well, one day you might surprise me, .

Thanks for the links, I have been looking at something similar to the first one, but not sure if it'll work as shown with the pins gripping the figures.

The second item looks intriguing, trying to get my head around how the 'arm' would actually work, .

Anyway, thanks again, I look forward to seeing your posts, cheers, .

G,

I might surprise myself one day also.

I understand about the pins not working as I have that same concern hence not buy the tool and as you know I don’t have an issue getting tools.

As for the ‘arm’, I find when using the cork bottle method I use my thumb and middle finger plus the rest to grab which leave my pointer finger to muck things up. The ‘arm’ gives that finger a resting place and provide a little defense in case the finger gets a little cheeky.

Ditto, except I use a toothpick instead of a paperclip.

Hi Ryan,

Glad I wasn't being too dense about the pins, thought I might have missed something obvious, .

Think for now I'm going to go along the lines of everyone else and use small metal pins, guess they could then be used to help fix figures to a diorama bae afterwards.

Cheers, ,

Hi Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to feedback your method.

It seems that everyone that has commented use a variation on a 'pin' method, so had a go today at finding a variation I was comfortable using.

Decided to use a small metal 'pin' inserted in the foot but the pin is held in a pin vice (see image below).

The one I have has a large 'bezel' (not sure if that is the correct word) which makes it quite stable when not being held. However, I am going to get a small block of wood and drill several suitable holes into which I can insert the 'bezel' for added stability when not in use.

Cheers, ,
