many years ago, I was working the grave yard shift. Traveling south on I-65, I run into all kinds of red lights with the interstate shut down cold. It seemed these guys were hauling an M60 tank and the truck broke down. Now they are roughly fifteen miles from home, so they just decided to drive the tank instead! Cops went nuts. So they followed the tank with red lights blazing. What is even more interesting is that the closest exit had them driving thru a small town with a few very narrow turns in it, and it of course was black topped! The next one (another ten miles or so) would have seriously bogged down the morning traffic pattern. Why they did this is still baffling to me. They could have sent one of them back about a half mile to the next exit to call for help, but decided to just rive it home. Bet it was rather interesting when they finally got home with it!

Well it could have been a manpower or time thing. Getting a heavy tow or substitute truck tractor could have been quite extended. So then the choice is between posting a guard on the vehicle, along with adequate food and water for that waiting time, or driving the short distance back to wherever. The police escort is to keep other drivers for plowing into the vehicle. I’ve seen that happen and it ain’t pretty.

actually the police were notified via CB radio from over the road truckers! A heavy lift flat bed trailer was about a half hour away, or worse case an hour away from Stout Field. Just thought it was funny, but gather the cops didn't think much of the idea.
