Earlier this month this thread, linked below, started me thinking about other options for track blackening. I didn't have any metal tracks but I did have pieces of white metal ERA from a Gunze Sangyo M60 with RISE. I tested those pieces using gun bluing solution and it worked. The metal parts went from bare metal to a very dark gray after just a few minutes soaking in the solution.

Now I wanted to try it on some tracks. I had ordered some Masterclub tracks for a project and those came in this morning. So tonite I washed the links to get off any type of release agent, grease or anything that could have gotten on them during the manufacture. Taking a few links I placed them in a small tub and covered them with the bluing agent. I just a few seconds the links darkened. I let them sit for several minutes and saw some white build up in the recesses and holes. A vigorous scrub with a tooth brush cleaned them up.

The results were not what I expected. Where the old white metal parts turned a very dark grey the Masterclub tracks turned a darker shade of grey with a rust colored patina. They actually look more authentic to my eyes as tracks tend to rust. A bit of burnishing and they would look great on a tank.

Just curious as I have that same kit. Have you tried that white medal in any other traditional track blacking product?

I also use patina for stained glass solder lines to darken metal tracks. Available from just about any retailer of stained glass supplies. The one thing I have noticed, at least with Friul tracks, is that there is some variability in their alloy. I have had sets in which the links in one bag turned dark grey and the links in the other bag turned more of a deep red rust color.

No, I tried the bluing solution because blackening agents seemed to be constantly in short supply and I wasn't too sure if I was going to use aftermarket tracks on the kit so I tested it on the only white metal I had. I grabbed a bottle one day while I was at walmart.
