Early form of wading trunks ??? Satans were converted from M3A1 diesels.
The box on top of the engine deck looks like an extra bin for track grousers (on the Satan closest to the camera).

Actually, I'd have to go with the aux. fuel juice theory. Those M3's were rather dimunitively sized buggers, and one can only assume they would have to have extra juice stored somewhere to lengthen their 'in-service' time...........wouldn't one?

Also....if I was going to have large canisters of extremely flammable liquid stored anywhere on my vehicle.....the REAR would be the place!
