paint it the base colr...say Khaki then progressive drybrushings of lighter and lighter colors working the brush in both directions (side to side and front to back) concentrating on were wear would normally be like the canvas over the support bars.

On my Heller CCKW ( don't worry, not in competition, mines got a cut'n'shut chassis as a CCKW352) I covered the plastic cab roof with facial tissue glued on with liquid cement. Stretch it over the plastic part and soak it with liquid cement, press down firmly. When dry trim all the edges so that it still fits!
Paint it normally and dry-brush over washes of different tones. Subtle washes are needed here rather than the stronger washes used on painted surfaces! Don't forget as well that a lot of canvases were painted to continue the cammo effect.
