Ive heard about this "ambush" camoflage they used in WW2, is this the same as the dark yellow, red brown, and dark green tri-color scheme?

Yes the three same colors were used but then spot of the other two colors would be added to the other color ..ie the dark yellow would have redbrown and green spots while the green would have redbrown and yellow spots ...etc. here's an example I did ...

Thanks Guy's I guess one final comment out of all this...To me, I guess Im questioning why the spots?, did they really do anything to help hide the tanks?

The spots, particularly the lighter ones, replicated the effect of sunlight through the trees. In all cases, what camo proposes to do is more to break up the outline so the eye has a harder time distinguishing the object from the background.
Remember, too, that the ambush scheme,as with the standard 3 color scheme, had no specific pattern. You might have a vehicle with only yellow spots on the dark or all three colors as spots. The spots varied greatly in size and could be soft or hard edged. I've seen depictions with small triangular spots, roundish spots, or rectangular spots, as well as depiction with a stenciled pattern the looks like this ( ).
