I'm really enjoying building the 1/72 Italeri M4.
Has anyone used HO scale buildings with 1/72 scale armor? Any opinions on doing so?
Thanks

Hi Chuck,

It's being done and maybe you can use it create depth in your dio, but personaly I wouldn't do it. I only build 1/72 and I'm not even using 1/76 in my dio's let alone 1/87 (HO), the difference is to big in my opinion.

Are there 1/72 scale buildings? Or do you scratchbuild your buildings? I'm not sure I have the skills to do that.

Hi Chuck

I also wouldn't recommend this. I prefer 1/72nd scale and the only time I mix any of the various smaller scales is when using 1/76th figures and accessories with 172 vehicles.

Just my preference of course!

I didnt interest if there are buildings fabricated at 1/72 scale. When you scratchbuild there are no more copies of it. it' unic and I like that in this way. So I scratchbuilded at my first dio at 1/72, a houselike building. It was fun. I'm sure you have the skills. You need just a little bit patience and ambition to do that.

I believe Verlinden is now making 1/72 structures.

This is a brand that makes ruins in 1/72, I 'don't know about the quality, I haven't seen them;

I must admit that I haven't done that much buildings yet, but what I've done is scratch build, I like the challenge better.

This is a link to a how-to, it's crude but with some fantasy you could make it work:

Otherwise try plaster casting, once you're over the threshold, it's not that difficult it just takes time.

You might be able to get away with using 1/87 buildings if you choose the building you use VERY CAREFULLY. Also, you would want to avoid showing any doorways on the finished building because this is the part of the building that most obviously shows the incorrect proportion. Windows often very in size. Wall height and pitch of roof also vary. The doors however are always very much the same.

To use 1/87 buildings, I would suggest sticking to sheds or other rural structures.

I would suggest however scratch building your own buildings. You could pick up some model railroad books on the subject. It isn't hard to do one at all. If you feel you must use 1/87 structures to convey your message, I would also suggest using 1/87 scale armor and figures. There is a large selection of both.
