Yep, have seen this on your site. Another reason why should I still stick on Tamiya kits. Thanks for sharing again!

Excellent article Vodnik, and very timely since I just picked up the Tamiya M1A2 and I've read several times how it doesn't have the non slip surface. This seems a little strange since I'd think it would be similar to cast surfaces and Tamiya does those very well. I guess it's just a over-site.

The reason is that Tamiya used hull parts from their very old M1 kit in all their later Abrams models with just minor changes. And this hull didn't have non-slip coating, as the early XM-1 tank didn't have it either (or had hardly noticeable one). Later they just added modified turret parts in M1A1 and recently M1A2 kits, and to match the old hull they had to omit non-slip from turrets as well...
